Restore job stalls - "The configuration service in the target machine does not seem to have started"

Environment

PlateSpin Migrate 9.0.2 , 9.1, 9.2
Platespin Protect 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3
Platespin Forge 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3
(running a ServerSync on Migrate)
(running a Restore or Failover job on Protect or Forge)

Situation

When running a disaster-recovery Restore job to any target host (except for VMware Infrastructure 3), the restore job stalls with the following message:

"The configuration service in the target machine does not seem to have started"

If you connect to the target machine console, it appears to be under PlateSpin control:

Resolution

This behavior may occur if a previous incremental synchronization had failed. For example, the described behavior would occur in the following scenario:

  • User discovers the source machine and target host
  • User configures incremental conversions
  • Complete initial incremental conversion
  • Any subsequent incremental conversion is aborted or failed
  • Run a restore job - the target will boot under PlateSpin control as the take control ISO is still attached to the virtual CD Rom

To allow the restore job to complete, the following steps are required:

  1. Power off the target virtual machine
  2. Detach the take control ISO from the virtual CD Rom drive using the VMware Infrastructure Client.
  3. Power on the target machine - it should now continue to boot into it's native operating system and the job should proceed
