Sentinel upgrade fails when it is upgraded from 8.0.1 to 8.0.1.1

Environment

NetIQ Sentinel 8.0.1 Sentinel Server

Situation

When Sentinel is upgraded from 8.0.1 to 8.0.1.1, the upgrade will not proceed further.  It gives the following message and halts the installation.

Unable to upgrade Sentinel. Symbolic links exist for the following folders: /opt/novell/sentinel/jdk/man/ja

Resolution

The workaround for this issue is to replace the current precheck.sh with an updated precheck.sh and then rerun the install.  Use the following steps.

1.  Extract the 8.0.1.1 installer. E.g. sentinel_server-8.0.1.1-3611.x86_64.tar.gz

2.  In the extracted folder (sentinel_server-8.0.1.1-3611.x86_64) go to the “bin” directory.

3.  Replace the “precheck.sh” file with the updated precheck.sh file.

Note:  contact NetIQ support to get a copy of the precheck.sh file

4.  Run install-sentinel, which will execute properly and the upgrade should proceed smoothly.

Cause

In Sentinel 8.0.1, we have changed the way we use the Java bundling.   Because of this change when installing Sentinel symbolic links are created under the jdk folder.  For this reason when we try to upgrade from 8.0.1 to 8.0.1.1, it fails to upgrade.

There is no problem when upgrading from Sentinel versions prior to 8.0.1 to 8.0.1.1 or from 8.0.1.1 to 8.1.
