3.0 Installing This Release

Install Vivinet Assessor on the computer from which you want to run assessments. For more information, see the Vivinet Assessor User Guide, included in the download package and also available at the Vivinet Assessor Documentation website.

4.0 NetIQ Performance Endpoints

Vivinet Assessor ships with NetIQ Performance Endpoint version 5.1. Performance Endpoints are software agents that must be installed on any computer you plan to include in VoIP Quality assessments.

The endpoint software is not required to run a Network Inventory, to assess device and link utilization and configuration, or to perform Bandwidth Modeling. The Performance Endpoint is used for the Assess VoIP Quality component of the product.

Endpoints can be installed in a matter of minutes. Users on the network to be assessed can easily install the software on their desktop computers. You can download it from the Performance Endpoints web page, or you can make it available for installation from a central server. Endpoint documentation, including complete installation instructions, is provided at the same web page.

NetIQ periodically updates the endpoint software to include more functionality. The latest endpoint software is available free at the Performance Endpoints web page.

5.0 Upgrading From Previous Release

When you upgrade from a previous version to Vivinet Assessor 4.1, the product runs in the demo mode. You need to register Vivinet Assessor 4.1 using a new authorization key to use the full functionality. Please contact the NetIQ Sales representative or login to the NetIQ Customer Center to get the authorization key. For more information, see Upgrading From Version 3.3 or Earlier in the NetIQ Vivinet Assessor 4.1 User Guide.

6.0 Known Issues

NetIQ Corporation strives to ensure our products provide quality solutions for your enterprise software needs. The following issues are currently being researched. If you need further assistance with any issue, please contact Technical Support.

  • The sample assessment cannot be imported into the Vivinet Assessor with SQL Server 2005. If Vivinet Assessor 4.1 is used with SQL Server 2005, the sample assessment provided with Vivinet Assessor 4.1 cannot be imported to SQL Server 2005 because of the file compatibility issue. This issue does not affect the assessments that you want to perform in your setup using Vivinet Assessor 4.1. (ENG346656)

  • Running the Assessor console and Analysis Console on Workstation platforms without Administrator privileges might cause an error. With this release, on Workstation platforms (Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10), you must run the Vivinet Assessor console as an Administrator. To run the Vivinet Assessor console, right-click on that appropriate icon in the Start menu, then select Run as Administrator. The Vivinet Analysis Console must also be run as an Administrator. (ENG340854)

  • Registering Vivinet Assessor must be performed with a user account other than Administrator with Windows 10 or later. The default browser for Microsoft Windows 10 or later is Microsoft Edge, which cannot run if you are logged into the computer as the Administrator account. The workaround for this issue is to either change the default browser to something other than Microsoft Edge or create a different account, other than the default Administrator account, then register the Assessor. (DOC340866)

  • Accessing the Vivinet Assessor Console remotely with Windows Remote Desktop Services might cause the CPU usage of the Assessor Console to go to 100%. This issue has been encountered only in the Assess VoIP Quality > Design window, and only if you manipulate the Design window, such as manually stretching the window or changing its shape. To avoid this problem, click the Maximize button in the Assessor window instead of resizing the window. (ENG311356)

  • Attempting to export an assessment might cause an error. You might receive an error message if you try exporting an assessment that the backup device cannot open. A sample error message could be: “Operating system error 5 (Access is denied).” To avoid this issue, before you export an assessment to a folder on your computer, ensure that the SQL Server (VASSESSOR) service has write permissions to that folder. The default SQL Server service account is Network Service. (DOC253598)

  • Installation cannot run from network share. You cannot install Vivinet Assessor from a network share. You must copy it to a local directory on your computer. If you downloaded the package, simply extract the contents of VivinetAssessor_4.1.xx.exe to a local directory, then install Vivinet Assessor. For more information, see Installing Vivinet Assessor in the NetIQ Vivinet Assessor 4.1 User Guide.

  • SNMPv3 might spike CPU usage. SNMPv3 requires additional overhead for authentication or encryption of query requests sent to the SNMP agent on the devices. As a result, discovering or monitoring network devices using SNMPv3 might produce a temporary spike in processor usage.

  • Multiple reports generated simultaneously might raise errors. Reports are generated in Microsoft Word and Excel. If you try to generate more than one report at a time from multiple assessments, you might receive an error message.

  • Illegible characters might appear in Japanese-language reports. These characters are formatted in the wrong Microsoft Word font. If you see any illegible characters in reports generated with the Japanese language support, first highlight the characters. Then click Format > Font and choose a Japanese (Kanji) font from the Font list.

  • “100% Unavailable” might appear in results for the most recent run or verification. Run the verification again, or allow the assessment run to continue to the next set of calls. If endpoints are still unavailable, you might have a DNS problem in your network, or you might have typed a hostname incorrectly.

  • Insufficient privileges error when installing Vivinet Assessor. If the Windows Services Control Panel is open when you are installing Vivinet Assessor, you might receive a Windows error message asking you to verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services. If you receive this error message, close the Control Panel, wait a few seconds, and then retry the installation. If you receive this error message when the Control Panel is not open, you must log on with sufficient administrative privileges.

7.2 Release 3.3.0.9 (Build 3.3.15845), March 2016

This release of Vivinet Assessor resolved the following issues:

  • When trying to import Vivinet Assessor assessment, Vivinet throws several errors. With this release, when the version of Microsoft SQL Server where the VASSESSOR instance resides is 2008 or later, Vivinet Assessor successfully imports assessments. (ENG333594)

  • Vivinet Assessor cannot store results from large inventory discoveries or call quality tests that would result in assessment database files of over 4 GB. With this release, the Vivinet Assessor installation program installs SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, which allows a database file size of 10 GBs. (ENG261321)

  • Assessor won't install on Windows 2008 R2 due to 64-bit SQL requirement. With this release, the Vivinet Assessor installation program installs 32-bit SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, which can run on 64-bit Windows. (ENG282013)

This release provided the following enhancements:

  • Support for the following versions of Windows: This release now supports Windows 2012 R2, Windows 10, and Windows 8.1.

  • Support for the following versions of Microsoft SQL Server: This release now supports SQL Server 2014, 2012, and 2008 R2 Express.

7.3 Release 3.3.15634, May 2012

This release resolved the following issue:

  • An error occurs when you try to make changes to charts in the Analysis Console on Windows 7. This release resolves an issue with the Vivinet Assessor Analysis Console on Windows 7 in which certain actions, such as adding a measurement to a chart, resulted in an error message. The Analysis Console chart data was not updated. With this release, the error no longer occurs in this situation in the Vivinet Assessor Analysis Console. (ENG314735)

7.4 Release 3.3.14712, August 2011

This release provided the following enhancements:

  • Support for Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit). With this release, you can install Vivinet Assessor on a Windows 7 64-bit computer.

  • Support for Microsoft SQL Server 2008, including SQL 2008 R2. With this release, you can use Vivinet Assessor with Microsoft SQL Server 2008, including SQL 2008 R2.

  • Support for Microsoft Office 2010. With this release, you can use Microsoft Word 2010 and Excel 2010 to generate and print reports for Vivinet Assessor.

This release also resolved the following issue:

  • No legends for x or y axis in Analysis Console. This release resolves an issue in which charts in the Analysis Console did not display the x or y axis when Vivinet Assessor was installed on Microsoft Windows 7 computers. With this release, charts display properly on Windows 7 computers. (ENG284226)

7.5 Hotfix 72564, October 2010

This release resolved the following issue:

  • Vivinet Assessor incorrectly displays the model names of devices. This release resolves an issue where Vivinet Assessor incorrectly displays the model names of devices in a network inventory, including removing the last character. (ENG294697)

7.6 Hotfix 72175, April 2010

This release resolved the following issue:

  • SNMP error occurs during network inventory discovery. This release resolves an issue in which SNMP requests attempt to use IPv6 MIBs, which are not included with Vivinet Assessor. With this release, Vivinet Assessor ships with IPv6 MIBs, which are installed by default in the Vivinet Assessor\MIBs folder.

  • Cisco switches do not respond to SNMP requests. This release resolves an issue in which Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(40)SG, for Cisco Catalyst 4900 Series switches, does not respond to SNMP GET or GETNext requests. The SNMP requests fail because they use MIBs that Cisco no longer supports: ifInNUcastPkts and ifOutNUcastPkts. With this release, Vivinet Assessor SNMP requests use newer MIBs that Cisco does support: ifInMulticastPkts, ifInBroadcastPkts, ifOutMulticastPkts, and ifOutBroadcastPkts.

7.7 Hotfix 72033, March 2010

This release provided the following enhancements:

  • Support for Microsoft Office 2007. Microsoft Word and Excel are required for generating and printing reports. Vivinet Assessor now supports Microsoft Office 2000, 2002 (Office XP), 2003, and 2007. Earlier versions are not supported.

  • Support for Microsoft Windows 7. With this release, you can install Vivinet Assessor on computers running Windows 7.

7.8 Hotfix 71135, January 2009

This release resolved the following issues:

  • SQL Server Express installation fails when service names are non-English. Before you install this release, the installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express fails on Windows computers with locales set to a language other than English. After you install this release, the installation process uses the default SQL Server 2005 Express services accounts, enabling the installation of Vivinet Assessor to proceed. (ENG242285)

  • No verification when assessment is too large. Before you install this release, Vivinet Assessor does not advise you when your assessment is too large for the capacity of the SQL Server 2005 Express database. Your assessment eventually fails. After you install this release, when you click the Verify button, Vivinet Assessor immediately notifies you when your assessment is too large. (ENG245854)

  • Installation on Windows Server 2008. Before you install this release, the prerequisite checking feature prohibits installation of the application on Windows Server 2008. After you install this release, you can successfully install Vivinet Assessor on Windows Server 2008. (ENG253166)

  • Device utilization always 100% unavailable for supported devices. Before you install this release, Vivinet Assessor might not be able to gather utilization statistics for devices that are generally supported by the product because of a lower default PDU size setting on those devices. This results in a utilization assessment of 100% unavailability for these devices. After you install this release, Vivinet Assessor accommodates these lower PDU size settings in its queries of the devices, enabling it to successfully gather utilization statistics. (ENG249161)

This release also provided the following enhancement:

  • Support for a blank context in SNMP version 3. With this release, you can configure SNMP permissions for devices that do not support context. For more information, see “Setting up a Network Inventory” in the Vivinet Assessor User Guide, included in the download package and also available at the Vivinet Assessor Documentation page. (ENG249452)

7.9 Release 3.3, September 2007

This release provided the following enhancements:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express. SQL Server 2005 Express is automatically installed when you install Vivinet Assessor 3.3.

  • Larger assessment database size. Because SQL Server 2005 Express is automatically installed when you install Vivinet Assessor, the maximum database file size has increased from 2 GB to 4 GB.

  • Additional granularity for call duration. You can now specify call durations of less than one minute in VoIP Quality assessments.

  • SNMP version 3. This version of Vivinet Assessor provides support for monitoring devices using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) version 3.0. New fields in the Edit SNMP Configuration dialog box allow you to specify SNMP v3 permission information. For more information, see the User Guide for Vivinet Diagnostics or the Help for the “Edit SNMP Configuration” dialog box.

  • Filtering of Ethernet links during Network Inventory. New fields in the Inventory Network Set Up view and the Add to List of Discovery Ranges dialog box let you specify ranges of Ethernet network interface port numbers to limit the number of Ethernet links that are discovered. For more information, see the Vivinet Assessor User Guide or the Help for the “Add to List of Discovery Ranges” dialog box.
