2.3 Registering Vivinet Assessor

Vivinet Assessor runs in Demo mode until you register an Evaluation or Retail license. Demo mode provides only limited functionality and will not allow you to run an assessment. For more information, see Section 2.3.3, Reviewing Demo Mode.

The Vivinet Assessor Registration component allows you to perform any registration task online, including registering a temporary evaluation license, reregistering to upgrade your license, or deregistering your license so that you can transfer the software to another computer.

To register the software, click Registration on the Options menu.

If both buttons (Evaluate and Register) in the Registration dialog box are grayed out, you may not have the necessary privileges to register Vivinet Assessor on this computer. These buttons may also be grayed out if an assessment is currently running, or if multiple assessment windows are active. You cannot register, reregister, or deregister while an assessment is running.

Click Help in any Registration dialog box for context-sensitive Help.

See the following topics for more information about continuing the registration process:

Click Print to print this information, or write it down, because when you call or e-mail the Registration Center, you must supply this information.

By using a Web browser on another computer, you can register or deregister the Vivinet Assessor software at www.netiq.com/register/nw.

E-mail requests, as well as after-hours calls, are processed within one business day. These requests must include the product and version number, registration number, password, and the license code provided in the Registration Summary dialog box. Provide this information to the Registration Center representative, who will in turn give you an authorization key to enable the retail version of Vivinet Assessor. Type the key in the appropriate field in the Enter Authorization Key dialog box and click Finish to complete your registration.

2.3.3 Reviewing Demo Mode

By default, Vivinet Assessor runs in Demo mode until you register a free evaluation or retail license. “Demo” is indicated on the Console interface and functionality is severely restricted. Although you can open and view an assessment of your network, you cannot run an assessment or collect any results. You can also generate reports from assessments you created while the product was running with a valid license.

Although you can open and view an assessment of your network, you cannot run an assessment or collect any results. You can also generate reports from assessments you created while the product was running with a valid license.

Register Vivinet Assessor by clicking Registration on the Options menu. Then click Evaluate or Register to begin the registration procedure.

If you purchased a time-limited license for Vivinet Assessor, the software will revert to Demo mode once the time limit is reached.

A sample VoIP Readiness assessment is included to help you evaluate the product. You can use this assessment to generate sample reports while you are running in Demo mode. To view it, simply open the Console. The sample is loaded automatically when you are running in Demo mode. You cannot run or verify the sample assessment in Demo mode, but you can examine the Design and generate either the Executive Summary or the Complete report. For more information, see Section 12.0, Working with the Sample Assessment.

2.3.4 Reviewing Evaluation Mode

After installation, Vivinet Assessor runs in Demo mode until it detects a valid evaluation or retail license file. To create a license file, you must enable a free evaluation with a temporary authorization key, or else you must enter a valid registration number and password, which are supplied when you purchase a retail license.

To create an evaluation license, click Registration on the Options menu, and then click Evaluate in the Registration dialog box. A series of dialog boxes lets you enter your temporary authorization key, which you probably received from a NetIQ sales representative.

Once you authorize an evaluation, Vivinet Assessor runs in Evaluation mode. Evaluation mode is identical to the product’s normal functioning, but is time-limited. After the evaluation period expires, the software once again runs in Demo mode. For more information, see Section 2.3.3, Reviewing Demo Mode.

At any point during your evaluation, you can register the software if you have a registration code and password. Click Registration on the Options menu and see Section 2.3.1, Registering a License for more information.

2.3.5 Upgrading a Vivinet Assessor License

You can upgrade an existing time-limited Vivinet Assessor license to extend the time period. Use the Registration dialog boxes to reregister an upgraded license for Vivinet Assessor. The dialog boxes direct you to perform the same steps for registering and obtaining an authorization key.

However, you must first contact a NetIQ sales representative and purchase an upgraded license. For more information, see Section 11.6, Getting Technical Support.

To upgrade your license, click Registration on the Options menu. The first dialog box displays your current license information, including the expiration date if the license is time-limited. Click Reregister to begin the upgrade.

The next dialog box asks for your registration number and password. You need to enter a new authorization key to authorize your new license. Click Next to use the Registration dialog boxes to get or enter a new authorization key. Refer to Section 2.3.1, Registering a License for more information; the procedure is exactly the same as when you registered.

2.3.6 Deregistering Vivinet Assessor

To relinquish your Vivinet Assessor license or transfer your license to another user or computer, you must first deregister your current Vivinet Assessor license. It is important that you deregister before you uninstall, otherwise, your product license will not allow you to use Vivinet Assessor on another computer or at a later time.

It is not necessary (or possible) to deregister an evaluation license.

To deregister Vivinet Assessor:

  1. On the Options menu, click Registration, and then click Deregister.

  2. As appropriate, select or clear This computer is connected to the Internet and Use a secure connection.

  3. Click Next. A popup message asks you to confirm whether you want to deregister Vivinet Assessor.

  4. Click Yes.

If deregistration succeeded, the deregistration code is provided in the Deregistration Summary dialog box. This unique code is tied to your authorization key and password. During deregistration, this information is saved in an ASCII text file, deregister.dat, in your Program Files\NetIQ\Vivinet Assessor directory.

  5. Click Print Deregistration Information to print a copy of your information in case you need to contact the NetIQ Registration Center.

  6. Click Finish, and then click OK.

Once you deregister, you cannot use Vivinet Assessor again until you reregister. When you restart Vivinet Assessor, the product is again running in Demo mode. If you are deregistering without an Internet connection, contact the NetIQ Registration Center by telephone or e-mail and provide your registration number and deregistration code. Otherwise, your license will not be available for registration by other users or on other computers.

If deregistration fails, follow the steps outlined in Section 2.3.7, Deregistration Failures.

2.3.7 Deregistration Failures

If deregistration fails for any reason, your Vivinet Assessor license becomes invalid. You need to locate your deregistration code to complete your deregistration and clear your license for registration on another computer. Navigate to the deregister.dat file in your Program Files\NetIQ\Vivinet Assessor directory. Open it using a Windows utility, such as Notepad, and locate the deregistration code. Copy the code to the Windows clipboard.

Next, use a Web browser to navigate to www.netiq.com/register/nw. Click the Deregister link. Paste the deregistration code into the Dereg code field and click Deregister. Your browser should display the message “Deregistration Successful.”

If you have problems with deregistration, contact NetIQ Technical Support. For more information, see Section 11.6, Getting Technical Support.

Once you have deregistered, you can register again. For more information, see Section 2.3.1, Registering a License.
