1.1 System Requirements

1.1.1 PlateSpin Recon Server Hosts

The PlateSpin Recon Server hosts must meet the following system requirements:

Table 1-1 System Requirements for PlateSpin Recon Server Hosts

Basic

Large-Scale

  • For monitored and inventoried workloads: Up to 100 workloads with PostgreSQL and up to 300 workloads with SQL Express

  • For only inventoried workloads: Up to 5,000 workloads

  • For monitored and inventoried workloads: 200 to 2,000 workloads

  • For only inventoried workloads: Up to 10,000 workloads

Operating System

Any of the following operating systems (OS) for both basic and large-scale servers. English, French, German, and Japanese locales are supported:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (64-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 (32-bit, 64-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP1 (32-bit, 64-bit)

For large-scale servers, NetIQ Corporation recommends using Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (64-bit).

IMPORTANT:

  • User Access Control (UAC) should be turned off on Windows Server 2008. For more information, refer to Knowledge Base article Q7012141.

  • To run the PlateSpin Recon Server on Windows Server 2008, you must use the built-in administrator account or the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory domain user account. Using Run as Administrator or other administrative account does not work.

Processor

Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz with hyperthreading or later

Xeon 2.8 or 3.2 GHz dual core or multi-processor recommended

Virtual Machine

2 Virtual CPUs

Physical machine (recommended) or 2 Virtual CPUs

Memory

2 GB (4 GB recommended)

8 GB (16 GB recommended)

NOTE:As the number of workloads increase, ensure that the memory is proportionately increased.

Disk Space

20 GB free

100 GB free

NOTE:Disk space requirements depend on the number of monitored workloads and the amount of historical summary and raw utilization data stored in the database. When you use a remote SQL Server database, ensure that the database host has 2 GB of allocated space. The disk space requirements are based on 30 days of monitoring. At least one CPU core for every 500 monitored servers is recommended. For detailed information, see Section 1.1.4, Database Growth Projections.

Database Engine

Any of the following:

  • SQL Server 2014

  • SQL Server 2012

  • SQL Express 2008 R2 (for new installation of Recon 4 or later)

  • PostgreSQL 8.3.4 (for upgrade only)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP2 Enterprise database

  • SQL Server 2014

  • SQL Server 2012

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP2 Enterprise database

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 with Windows Server 2008 SP2/SP1

Software

For both basic and large-scale servers:

  • Microsoft IIS 5.0/6.0/7.5 (with ASP.NET)

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

  • Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.6

IMPORTANT:Ensure that Microsoft IIS is installed before installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

1.1.2 PlateSpin Recon Client Hosts

The PlateSpin Recon Client hosts must meet the following system requirements:

Table 1-2 System Requirements for PlateSpin Recon Client Hosts

Component

Requirements

Operating System

Any of the following (either physical or virtual). English, French, German, and Japanese locales are supported:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (64-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 (32-bit, 64-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP1 (32-bit, 64-bit)

NOTE:To run the PlateSpin Recon Client on Windows Server 2008, you must use the built-in administrator account or the Windows Server 2008 Active Directory domain user account. Using Run as Administrator or other administrative account does not work.

Hardware

  • CPU: Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz

  • Memory: 2 GB

  • Disk Space: 80 MB free

Software

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

1.1.3 PlateSpin Recon in a Virtual Machine

You can install the PlateSpin Recon Server and the PlateSpin Recon Client software on a VMware ESXi 5.x virtual machine. For detailed information about the server requirements, see Section 1.1.1, PlateSpin Recon Server Hosts, and for information about the client requirements, see Section 1.1.2, PlateSpin Recon Client Hosts.

Installing the PlateSpin Recon Server in a virtual machine restricts the monitoring and inventorying capabilities of the software to:

  • 5,000 inventoried workloads

  • 1,000 monitored workloads
