3.0 Contents of the Download Package

SNMP Traps includes a managed object, qSNMPTraps.dll, and Knowledge Scripts to discover and monitor SNMP Traps resources. The download package includes this release notes, a management guide, Help for Knowledge Scripts, and several files that are used during installation:

  • AM70-SNMPTraps-8.1.38.0.msi, the module installer.

  • AM70-SNMPTraps-8.1.38.0.ini, a configuration file used with the AppManager setup program.

  • AM70-SNMPTraps-8.1.38.0.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center. This is the file you check into the Control Center Web Depot.

  • AM70-SNMPTraps-8.1.38.0-RepositoryFiles.exe, a compressed file that contains the QDB and console files. You do not need to run this file during installation.

  • ckSNMPTraps.exe, the pre-installation check used with the AppManager setup program.

  • DefaultRule_SNMPTraps.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center.

When you download the module, these files are copied by default to the local folder on the download computer. Consider copying these files to the \windows_installation\setup\Setup Files folder on the same distribution computer on which you saved your main AppManager software and documentation. By doing so, you maintain all AppManager software in one location that is easily accessible when you want to add more repositories, management servers, or agents.

4.0 Installing This Module

Run the module installer to install the module components in the following locations:

  • On all proxy agent computers that will monitor traps sent by remote devices

  • On all console computers to install the Help and console extensions

If you plan to monitor SNMP v3 traps, install the NetIQ Trap Receiver and the AppManager agent on the same computer to prevent malicious users from gaining secure access to the information in these traps. By default, the Trap Receiver and the AppManager agent are installed on the same computer.

You must also install the Knowledge Scripts. You can install these components into local or remote QDBs. When installing to the primary QDB, select the option to install Knowledge Scripts, and then specify the SQL Server name of the server hosting the QDB, as well as the case-sensitive QDB name.

IMPORTANT:If you use Control Center 7.x, run the module installer for each QDB attached to Control Center. If you use Control Center 8.x or later, run the module installer only for the primary QDB, and Control Center will automatically replicate this module to secondary QDBs.

For more information about installing this module, see the AppManager for SNMP Traps Management Guide, included in the download package.

5.0 Known Issues

NetIQ Corporation strives to ensure our products provide quality solutions for your enterprise software needs. The following issues are currently being researched. If you need further assistance with any issue, please contact Technical Support.

  • Deleting an object from the Navigation pane or TreeView does not remove the naming for that object. If you delete an object from the Navigation pane or TreeView, the module does not remove the naming for that object, and the Discovery_SNMPTraps and the SNMPTraps_TrapMonitor Knowledge Scripts cannot take action on the new name for the deleted device. To change an object name, select Yes for the Update the TreeView object name if the device name changed since the previous discovery? parameter in the Discovery_SNMPTraps script. If you need to delete an "orphaned" Navigation pane or TreeView object, delete it manually. (DOC328733)

6.0 Previous Releases

This release of SNMP Traps includes enhancements added in previous releases.

6.1 Release 8.1.0.2, March 2017

This release of AppManager for SNMP Traps provided the following enhancement:

  • Support for Microsoft Windows Server 2016: This release supports Windows Server 2016. For more information, see the System Requirements.

This release of AppManager for SNMP Traps resolved the following issue:

  • Changed the CSV mapping for Nortel traps to closely match the short messages of the Nortel alarms Knowledge Script. Fixed the MIB naming conflict for COMMON-TRAP-MIB shipped by SNMPTraps and NortelCS1K. Also, fixed the representation of enterprises.562 from NT to Nortel. (ENG344082)

6.2 Release 8.1.0.1, August 2016

This release provided the following enhancements:

  • Support for Microsoft Windows 10. This release supports Windows 10. For more information, see the System Requirements.

  • Support for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2. This release supports Windows Server 2012 R2. For more information, see the System Requirements.

  • Customizing the event messages and severities for traps from Avaya Aura Session Manager and Avaya Communication Server 1000. With this release, you can customize the event messages and the severities for traps forwarded by Avaya Aura Session Manager and Avaya Communication Server 1000.

This release resolved the following issues:

  • SNMP Traps module does not map the definitions from Avaya Aura Session Manager 7. The traps from Avaya Aura Session Manager 7 were not mapped in the SNMPTraps_AlarmMappings.csv file. In this release, the SNMP Trap module correctly maps the traps from Avaya Aura Session Manager 7. (ENG340610)

  • SNMP Traps module does not map the definitions from Avaya Communication Manager 1000. The traps from Avaya Communication Manager 1000 were not mapped in the SNMPTraps_AlarmMappings.csv file. In this release, the SNMP Trap module correctly maps the traps from Avaya Communication Manager 1000. (ENG341820)

  • WITS traps messages are not specific. The short messages for WITS traps were too generic. In this release, the short messages are updated to indicate the events precisely. (ENG342239)

  • CISCO-SYSLOG traps messages are not specific. The short messages for CISCO-SYSLOG traps were too generic. In this release, the short messages are updated to indicate the events precisely. (ENG342361)

6.3 Release 8.1, June 2015

This release provided the following enhancement:

  • Support for Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption algorithm. This release now supports the AES encryption algorithm in addition to the Data Encryption Standard (DES) encryption algorithm. (ENG338189)

6.4 Release 8.0.139.0, May 2014

This release resolved the following issues:

  • SNMPTraps_TrapMonitor Knowledge Script failed when filtering multiple OIDs. This release resolves an issue in which the SNMPTraps_TrapMonitor job failed when you specified filters for multiple object identifiers (OIDs). The job failed because the SNMPTraps_TrapMonitor script limited the size of the messages exchanged between the Trap Receiver client and the server. With multiple filters applied by the job, the exchanged messages grew too large, causing the job to fail. With this release, an update to the SNMPTraps_TrapMonitor script removed the limitation on the size of the messages, allowing you to apply multiple filters for this script without causing it to fail. (ENG332391)

  • Legacy Avaya Sipera traps are not processed. This release resolves an issue in which the legacy Avaya Sipera traps were not processed because the traps did not have the variable sysUpTime, and were therefore non-compliant with SNMPv2c. With this release, an update to the NetIQ Trap Receiver processes the legacy Avaya Sipera traps properly, even if the sysUpTime variable is not present. (ENG333516)

  • SNMPTraps_AddMIB Knowledge Script creates a new proxy object when you run the job on an agent with FQDN. This release resolves an issue in which the SNMPTraps_AddMIB job created a new proxy object with a NetBIOS name if you added an agent with a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and you ran the job on that agent. With this release, an update to the SNMPTraps_AddMIB script does not create a new proxy object when you run this script on an agent with a FQDN. (ENG334143)

  • SNMP Traps module does not map the notifications available in the updated version of Avaya Aura Session Manager 6.3 SP1. This release resolves an issue in which some trap notifications present in the updated version of Avaya Aura Session Manager 6.3 Service Pack 1 were not mapped in the SNMP Traps module. With this release, all these trap notifications are mapped correctly. (ENG332550)

  • SNMP Traps module does not map the notification available in 6.2 Avaya AES documentation. This release resolves an issue in which the 6.2 Avaya AES documentation has a new trap notification that was not mapped in the SNMP Traps module. With this release, the SNMP Traps module maps this new trap notification. (ENG332589)

  • SNMP Traps module does not map the new or updated notifications available in Avaya 6.3 media gateway. This release resolves an issue in which the Avaya 6.3 Media Gateway has several notifications that were not mapped properly in the SNMP Traps module. With this release, the SNMP Traps module maps all the new and updated notifications correctly. (ENG332590)

  • SNMP Traps module does not map the definitions from LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager. This release resolves an issue in which the traps from LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager were not mapped in the SNMPTraps_AlarmMappings.csv file. With this release, the SNMP Traps module correctly maps the traps from LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager. (ENG334236 and ENG331276)

6.5 Release 8.0.131.0, September 2013

This initial release included the following new Knowledge Scripts:

  • Discovery_SNMPTraps, which you can use to discover known devices that forward SNMP traps to a NetIQ Trap Receiver server. This script discovers devices that generate traps using SNMP version 1, 2, or 3.

  • SNMPTraps_AddMIB, which you can use to add management information base (MIB) files, enabling you to convert trap object identifiers (OIDs) into object descriptive names (ODEs) to make monitored traps more readable with the SNMPTraps_TrapMonitor Knowledge Script. You can also use this script to reload all MIB files in the MIB directory.

  • SNMPTraps_TrapMonitor, which you can use to:

    • Monitor SNMP v1, v2, and v3 traps sent by remote devices in real time.

    • Display trap source devices in an AppManager console on demand.

    • Filter the list of devices monitored, with inclusion filters based on OID, ODE, and MIB subtree, and exclusion filters based OID, ODE, varbind value, and MIB subtree.

    • Monitor NetIQ Trap Receiver availability.

    • Monitor traps from unknown devices.

    • Ability to customize the formatting for the AppManager events that correspond to SNMP traps listed in the SNMPTraps_AlarmMappings.csv file that comes with this module.
