1.0 What’s New?

This release of AppManager for Dell OpenManage provides the following enhancement:

  • Support for monitoring of Dell hardware through iDRAC: With this release, Dell OpenManage can now be monitored through Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC). For more information, see the System Requirements.

To get the updates provided in this release, you must install the module to the AppManager repository (QDB) and on the agent computer, and then propagate changes to any running jobs for the Knowledge Scripts that were updated in this release. AppManager 7.x does not automatically update renamed or copied Knowledge Scripts. For more information, see the “Upgrading Knowledge Script Jobs” section in the management guide.

This release of AppManager for Dell OpenManage replaces all Previous Releases.

3.0 Contents of the Download Package

AppManager for Dell OpenManage includes a managed object, qdella4.dll, and Knowledge Scripts to discover and monitor Dell OpenManage resources. The download package includes this release notes, a management guide, Help for Knowledge Scripts, and several files that are used during installation:

  • AM70-DELL-8.0.24.0.msi, the module installer.

  • AM70-DELL-8.0.24.0.ini, a configuration file used with the AppManager setup program.

  • AM70-DELL-8.0.24.0.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center. This is the file you check into the Control Center Web Depot.

  • AM70-DELL-8.0.24.0-RepositoryFiles.exe, a compressed file that contains the QDB and console files. You do not need to run this file during installation.

  • ckDELL.exe, the pre-installation check used with the AppManager setup program.

  • DefaultRule_DELL.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center.

When you download the module, these files are copied by default to the local folder on the download computer. Consider copying these files to the \windows_installation\setup\Setup Files folder on the same distribution computer on which you saved your main AppManager software and documentation. By doing so, you maintain all AppManager software in one location that is easily accessible when you want to add more repositories, management servers, or agents.

4.0 Installing This Module

Run the module installer to install the module components in the following locations:

  • On the Dell OpenManage computers you want to monitor (agents) to install the agent components

  • On all console computers to install the Help and console extensions

Run the module installer only once on each of these computers.

You must also install the Knowledge Scripts. You can install these components into local or remote QDBs. When installing to the primary QDB, select the option to install Knowledge Scripts, and then specify the SQL Server name of the server hosting the QDB, as well as the case-sensitive QDB name.

IMPORTANT:If you use Control Center 7.x, run the module installer for each QDB attached to Control Center. If you use Control Center 8.x or later, run the module installer only for the primary QDB, and Control Center will automatically replicate this module to secondary QDBs.

Install Knowledge Scripts only once per QDB. The module installer now installs Knowledge Scripts for each module directly into the QDB instead of to the \AppManager\qdb\kp folder as in previous releases.

For more information about installing this module, see the AppManager for Dell OpenManage Management Guide, included in the download package.

  • Discovery_Dell Knowledge Script is discovering virtual interfaces as well as physical disks: When Discovery_Dell is configured to discover only physical NIC, virtual interfaces are also getting discovered. This release provided the following enhancement:

  • Support for Dell OpenManage 7.1 and 7.0. This release adds support for Dell OpenManage versions 7.1 and 7.0. For more information, see the System Requirements.

This release also resolved the following issue:

  • Dell_NICFail and Dell_NICError Knowledge Scripts report errors when run on objects with virtual interfaces. This release addresses an issue where Discovery_Dell discovered interfaces not associated with NIC cards, called virtual interfaces, which are provided in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Other software programs, such as VMware, also provide virtual interfaces to emulate NIC cards. Dell_NICFail and Dell_NICError Knowledge Script jobs that run on these virtual interface objects report errors due to the fact that a NIC card must be present for those Knowledge Scripts to run and report useful information. With this release, discovering the virtual interfaces is optional. The behavior of the module changes with this release by only monitoring physical interfaces by default. If you want to display virtual interfaces in the TreeView, set the Discovery_Dell Discover only physical interfaces? parameter to no. After you install this release, you must recreate any Dell_NICFail and Dell_NICError jobs on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 computers. (ENG316210)

6.7 Release 7.3.55.0, September 2011

This release resolved the following issues:

  • Discovery fails when localhost is SNMP source address. This release resolves an issue in which the Discovery_Dell Knowledge Script job fails when the Microsoft SNMP service is configured to receive packets from localhost rather than the host IP address. With this release, a code change allows the managed object to attempt to connect to the SNMP agent as a localhost source address. If that attempt fails, the managed object connects to the SNMP agent as a host IP source address. (ENG309202)

  • Analysis Center cannot report data from some Knowledge Scripts. This release resolves an issue in which Analysis Center cannot report data generated by Dell_HealthCheck and Dell_NICFail Knowledge Scripts. With this release, the Knowledge Scripts are updated allowing Analysis Center to use the data. If you have jobs for these Knowledge Scripts running when you upgrade, ensure you propagate the changes to the job. For more information about how to propagate changes to running jobs, see the AppManager for Dell OpenManage Management Guide, included in the download package. (ENG310779)

With this release, the Dell_NICFail script checks to make sure the interface is administratively up before potentially generating any events. (ENG274248)
