What's New?

This release of AppManager for Symantec NetBackup resolves the following issue:

  • Discovery fails with an error stating that the job received no response from the managed object. This release resolves an issue in which the Discovery_NetBackup Knowledge Script failed with the following error: No response from managed object. With this release, an update to the way in which the managed object handles results returned from NetBackup commands that are large in size prevents the Discovery_NetBackup script from failing in this situation. (ENG333186)

To get the updates provided in this release, you must install the module to the AppManager repository (QDB), and then propagate changes to any running jobs for the Knowledge Scripts that were updated in this release. AppManager 7.x does not automatically update renamed or copied Knowledge Scripts. For more information, see the "Upgrading Knowledge Script Jobs" section in the management guide.

This release of AppManager for Symantec NetBackup replaces all Previous Releases.

Contents of the Download Package

AppManager for Symantec NetBackup includes a managed object, QNetBackupA4.dll, and Knowledge Scripts to discover and monitor Symantec NetBackup resources. The download package includes this release notes file, a management guide, Help for Knowledge Scripts, and several files that are used during installation:

  • AM70-NetBackup-7.5.77.0.msi, the module installer.
  • AM70-NetBackup-7.5.77.0.ini, a configuration file used with the AppManager setup program.
  • AM70-NetBackup-7.5.77.0.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center. This is the file you check into the Control Center Web Depot.
  • AM70-NetBackup-7.5.77.0-RepositoryFiles.exe, a compressed file that contains the QDB and console files. You do not need to run this file during installation.
  • ckNetBackup.exe, the pre-installation check used with the AppManager setup program.
  • DefaultRule_NetBackup.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center.

When you download the module, these files are copied by default to the local folder on the download computer. Consider copying these files to the \windows_installation\setup\Setup Files folder on the same distribution computer on which you saved your main AppManager software and documentation. By doing so, you maintain all AppManager software in one location that is easily accessible when you want to add more repositories, management servers, or agents.

Installing This Module

Run the module installer to install the module components in the following locations:

  • On the NetBackup computers you want to monitor (agents) to install the agent components
  • On all console computers to install the Help and console extensions

Run the module installer only once on each of these computers.

You must also install the Knowledge Scripts. You can install these components into local or remote QDBs. When installing to the primary QDB, select the option to install Knowledge Scripts, and then specify the SQL Server name of the server hosting the QDB, as well as the case-sensitive QDB name.

Important If you use Control Center 7.x, run the module installer for each QDB attached to Control Center. If you use Control Center 8.x, run the module installer only for the primary QDB, and Control Center will automatically replicate this module to secondary QDBs.

Install Knowledge Scripts only once per QDB. The module installer now installs Knowledge Scripts for each module directly into the QDB instead of to the \AppManager\qdb\kp folder as in previous releases.

For more information about installing this module, see the AppManager for Symantec NetBackup Management Guide, included in the download package.

Known Issues

NetIQ Corporation strives to ensure our products provide quality solutions for your enterprise software needs. The following issues are currently being researched. If you need further assistance with any issue, please contact Technical Support.

  • The NetBackup_ErrorLog Knowledge Script does not display the correct server name for events. In the NetBackup_ErrorLog Knowledge Script, the Details page in the Event Properties displays "UNKNOWN" instead of the server name when AppManager for Symantec NetBackup raises an event. This is due to the settings in the NetBackup Administration Console. For more information about this error, see the Symantec Knowledge Base article TECH35145. (ENG313554)
  • Some Knowledge Scripts generate an error when running on UAC-enabled media servers. AppManager for Symantec NetBackup generates a Failed Event message when you run the following Knowledge Scripts on UAC-enabled media servers: NetBackup_Clients, NetBackup_SuccessfulJobs, NetBackup_IncompleteJobs, NetBackup_FailedJobs, and NetBackup_ErrorLog. (ENG315280)

Release 7.5.71.0, October 2013

This release provided the following enhancement:

  • Support for monitoring Symantec NetBackup Server 7.5. This module now supports monitoring Symantec NetBackup Server 7.5. For more information, see the System Requirements.

This release also resolved the following issue:

  • Control Center 8.x does not create a deployment task for AppManager for Symantec NetBackup. This release resolves an issue in which deploying the module with Control Center 8.x did not create a deployment task for AppManager for this module, and you had to select Skip pre-deployment check on the Packages page of the Deployment Rule wizard to work around the issue. With this release, Control Center 8.x properly creates a deployment task for this module. (ENG312970)

This release of AppManager for Symantec NetBackup provided the following enhancements:

  • Support for Symantec NetBackup Server 7.1 and 7.0
  • Support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2

Release 7.4.26.0, August 2009

This release resolved the following issue:

  • NetBackup jobs fail to execute NetBackup command. Before you install this release, three AppManager for Symantec NetBackup Knowledge Script jobs fail with the following error message: Error in execution of NetBackup command 'bperror' ERROR: failed with RC= - 902. The error affects the following scripts: ErrorLog, IncompleteJobs, and SuccessfulJobs. After you install this release, a change in the scripts' code allows them to successfully execute the bperror command. (ENG273455)

Hotfix 71134, September 2008

This hotfix resolved the following issue:

  • The Netbackup_FailedJobs Knowledge Script only works the first time the script runs. Before you install this release, the NetBackup_FailedJobs script only worked the first time you ran the script in conjunction with NetBackup version 6.5. Later iterations of the script failed because of inconsistent date/time values. After you install this release, Netbackup_FailedJobs Knowledge Script works for every iteration.

This release of AppManager for Symantec NetBackup added support for Symantec NetBackup Server 6.5.
