What's New?

This release of AppManager for Citrix XenApp resolves the following issue:

  • XenApp_FarmUserLoad Knowledge Script does not generate datapoints if no users are connected to the XenApp server. This release resolves an issue in which the XenApp_FarmUserLoad Knowledge Script failed to generate datapoints unless a user was connected to a XenApp server in the server farm. With this release, changes to the XenApp_FarmUserLoad script enables the script to generate datapoints even if no users are connected to a XenApp server. (ENG333515)

To get the updates provided in this release, you must install the module to the AppManager repository (QDB), and then propagate changes to any running jobs for the Knowledge Scripts that were updated in this release. AppManager 7.x does not automatically update renamed or copied Knowledge Scripts. For more information, see the "Upgrading Knowledge Script Jobs" section in the management guide.

This release of AppManager for Citrix XenApp replaces all Previous Releases.

Contents of the Download Package

AppManager for Citrix XenApp includes AppManager Knowledge Scripts that discover and monitor XenApp resources. The download package includes these release notes, a management guide, Help for Knowledge Scripts, and several files that are used during installation:

  • AM70-XenApp-8.1.33.0.msi, the module installer.
  • AM70-XenApp-8.1.33.0.ini, a configuration file used with the AppManager setup program.
  • AM70-XenApp-8.1.33.0.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center. This is the file you check into the Control Center Web Depot.
  • AM70-XenApp-8.1.33.0-RepositoryFiles.exe, a compressed file that contains the QDB and console files. You do not need to run this file during installation.
  • DefaultRule_XenApp.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center.
  • ckXenApp.exe, the pre-installation check used with the AppManager setup program.

When you download the module, these files are copied by default to the local folder on the download computer. Consider copying these files to the \windows_installation\setup\Setup Files folder on the same distribution computer on which you saved your main AppManager software and documentation. By doing so, you maintain all AppManager software in one location that is easily accessible when you want to add more repositories, management servers, or agents.

Installing This Module

Run the module installer to install the module components in the following locations:

  • On the XenApp computers you want to monitor to install the agent components
  • On all console computers to install the Help and console extensions

Run the module installer only once on each of these computers.

You must also install the Knowledge Scripts. You can install these module components to either local or remote databases. When installing to the primary QDB, select the option to install Knowledge Scripts, and then specify the SQL Server name of the server hosting the QDB, as well as the case-sensitive QDB name.

Important If you use Control Center 7.x, run the module installer for each QDB attached to Control Center. If you use Control Center 8.x, run the module installer only for the primary QDB, and Control Center will automatically replicate this module to secondary QDBs.

Install Knowledge Scripts only once per QBD. The module installer now installs Knowledge Scripts for each module directly into the QDB instead of to the \AppManager\qdb\kp folder as in previous releases.

For more information about installing this module, see the AppManager for Citrix XenApp Management Guide, included in the download package.

Known Issues

NetIQ Corporation strives to ensure our products provide quality solutions for your enterprise software needs. The following issue is currently being researched. If you need further assistance with any issue, please contact Technical Support.

  • Discovery does not pick up XenApp configuration changes. If you make a configuration change to any server associated with a Citrix farm, AppManager for Citrix XenApp might not report the correct information even if you repeat discovery after making the change. For example, if you rename a zone using the XenApp Delivery console, and then run the Discovery Knowledge Script, the old and the new zone names display in the AppManager TreeView. To work around this issue, restart the IMA or MFCOM service from the Citrix agent before you repeat the discovery process. (DOC310170)
  • Error message for failing to initialize PowerShell session does not describe how to resolve the issue. The error message Failed to initialize MCPSHostServer PowerShell session has the error description The process failed to start because user username could not be impersonated: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. This description is accurate, but does not tell you how to resolve the issue. If you receive this message, use Security Manager to specify that the Domain Account should log on as a service. You can specify this by adding the domain account under Local Policies>User Rights>User Rights Assignment>Log on as service. (ENG314408)

Previous Releases

This release of AppManager for Citrix XenApp includes enhancements added in previous releases.

Release 8.1.26.0, December 2011

This release combined the features of AppManager for Citrix XenApp 8.0 and 8.1 to provide the following:

  • Support for Citrix XenApp 5.0, 6.0, and 6.5 in one module. This release adds backward compatibility for XenApp version 5 to the latest XenApp module. XenApp version 5 is already supported by the AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame version 7.2, and that module is still available if you need support for older operating systems. AppManager for Citrix XenApp version 8.0 provided support for XenApp 6.0 and 6.5. With this release, AppManager for Citrix XenApp now combines support for all major XenApp versions in one module.
  • PowerShellHost server can run as a different user than the AppManager agent. This release allows you to configure user permissions so that the the PowerShellHost server, MCPSHostServer.exe runs under a different user account than the AppManager agent service, netiqmc.exe. With this release, netiqmc can run under an account that does not have XenApp privileges, while having MCPSHostServer.exe run under an account with the XenApp permissions required for monitoring.
  • XenApp category of Knowledge Scripts. With the AppManager for Citrix XenApp module, you have a XenApp category of Knowledge Scripts that work with XenApp servers and server farms to track vital aspects of system performance in clustered and non-clustered environments.

This release also resolved the following issue:

  • Duplicate applications appear multiple times in TreeView. This release resolves an issue where published applications on farms were displayed on the TreeView for every discovered object. With this release, the Discovery_XenApp Knowledge Script now allows you to specify whether you want to discover published applications in a farm environment. If you do want to discover applications on a farm, use the new XenApp_ApplicationUsersHighAll Knowledge Script instead of the existing XenApp_ApplicationUsersHigh Knowledge Script to eliminate issues with having duplicate published applications. If you do not have applications on a farm, continue using the XenApp_ApplicationUsersHigh Knowledge Script. (ENG311406)

Release 8.0.50.0, September 2011

This release provided a new module that supports Citrix XenApp versions 6.0 and 6.5 with all new Knowledge Scripts. This release was not an upgrade of the AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame module that continues to provide support for some older versions of XenApp, MetaFrame, and Presentation Server.

The new XenApp category of Knowledge Scripts works with Citrix XenApp versions 6.0 and 6.5 servers and server farms to track vital aspects of system performance in clustered and non-clustered environments, including:

  • Number of sessions on a server
  • Number of sessions opened by each user
  • Number of bytes transferred from each session by each user
  • Average and high latency of server sessions
  • Session states
  • Number of processes on a server across all sessions
  • Memory and CPU resources used by server processes
  • Number of users running an application across all sessions
  • Percentage of all licenses that are in use on the License Server, in clustered and non-clustered environments
  • Whether a specific application is on the list of published applications, and which servers are assigned to that published application
  • Whether a server is the default data collector along with zone information for a specific Citrix Server
