AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame (MFXP)

Version 7.2.107.0

Release Notes

Date Published: March 2014

AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame (MFXP) lets you manage the performance and availability of Citrix MetaFrame and XenApp servers. By monitoring your Citrix server implementation at the component level, you can quickly identify areas that might have a negative impact on overall performance, and then you can modify how you have configured the system.

This release improves usability and resolves previous issues. Many of these improvements were made in direct response to suggestions from our customers. We thank you for your time and valuable input. We hope you continue to help us ensure our products meet all your needs. You can post feedback in the AppManager forum on Qmunity, our community Web site that also includes product notifications, blogs, and product user groups.

For more information about this release and for the latest management guide, see the AppManager Documentation page. To download this module and view the latest release notes, see the AppManager Module Upgrades & Trials page.

What's New?

This release of AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame resolves the following issue:

  • Master view is unavailable in Operator Console. This release resolves an issue in which the Master view in Operator Console became unavailable when the Discovery_MFXP Knowledge Script discovered a very large number of objects. With this release, the Discovery_MFXP Knowledge Script includes a new parameter folder, Discovery Details, that contains a new parameter, Discover applications (yes/no)?. Select Yes for this new parameter to discover applications on XenApp servers in addition to servers. Select No to prevent the script from discovering applications, especially if the Master view becomes unavailable when you run the Discovery_MFXP script. (ENG333085)

To get the updates provided in this release, you must install the module to the AppManager repository (QDB) and on the agent computer, and then propagate changes to any running jobs for the Knowledge Scripts that were updated in this release. AppManager 7.x does not automatically update renamed or copied Knowledge Scripts. For more information, see the "Upgrading Knowledge Script Jobs" section in the management guide.

This release of AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame replaces all Previous Releases.

Contents of the Download Package

AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame includes a managed object, qmfxpa4.dll, and Knowledge Scripts to discover and monitor Citrix resources. The download package includes this release notes file, a management guide, Help for Knowledge Scripts, and several files that are used during installation:

  • AM70-MFXP-7.2.107.0.msi, the module installer.
  • AM70-MFXP-7.2.107.0.ini, a configuration file used with the AppManager setup program.
  • AM70-MFXP-7.2.107.0.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center. This is the file you check into the Control Center Web Depot.
  • AM70-MFXP-7.2.107.0-RepositoryFiles.exe, a compressed file that contains the QDB and console files. You do not need to run this file during installation.
  • DefaultRule_MFXP.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center.
  • ckMFXP.exe, the pre-installation check used with the AppManager setup program.

When you download the module, these files are copied by default to the local folder on the download computer. Consider copying these files to the \windows_installation\setup\Setup Files folder on the same distribution computer on which you saved your main AppManager software and documentation. By doing so, you maintain all AppManager software in one location that is easily accessible when you want to add more repositories, management servers, or agents.

Installing This Module

Run the module installer to install the module components in the following locations:

  • On the Citrix MetaFrame computers you want to monitor (agents) to install the agent components
  • On all console computers to install the Help and console extensions

Run the module installer only once on each of these computers.

You must also install the Knowledge Scripts. You can install the Knowledge Scripts to either local or remote QDBs. When installing to the primary QDB, select the option to install Knowledge Scripts, and then specify the SQL Server name of the server hosting the QDB, as well as the case-sensitive QDB name.

Important If you use Control Center 7.x, run the module installer for each QDB attached to Control Center. If you use Control Center 8.x, run the module installer only for the primary QDB, and Control Center will automatically replicate this module to secondary QDBs.

Install Knowledge Scripts only once per QDB. The module installer now installs Knowledge Scripts for each module directly into the QDB instead of to the \AppManager\qdb\kp folder as in previous releases.

For more information about installing this module, see the AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame Management Guide, included in the download package.

Previous Releases

This release of AppManager for Citrix MetaFrame includes enhancements added in previous releases.

Release 7.2.96.0, June 2012

This release resolved the following issues:

  • MFXP_LicenseInUseHigh Knowledge Script does not find license files when file path ends in backslash. This release resolves an issue in which the MFXP_LicenseInUseHigh job could not properly interpret the location of the license files that grant connection rights to a client when the path ended with a \. When this occurred, the job failed with the following error message: An error has occurred which prevented data from being retrieved for this iteration. With this release, the Knowledge Script successfully accesses the license files for this module. (ENG320140)
  • MFXP_ApplicationUsersHigh Knowledge Script raises numerous events when attempting to monitor streaming applications. This release resolves an issue in which the MFXP_ApplicationUsersHigh job attempted to monitor a streaming application, even though the Knowledge Script does not support streaming applications. When this occurred, the job failed with the error message: Failed to get application info for every iteration. With this release, the Knowledge Script identifies when a job is attempting to monitor streaming applications, and reports a single information message stating that the streaming applications are not supported. (ENG318996)

Release 7.2.89.0, March 2012

This release resolved the following issue:

  • MFXP_LicenseInUseHigh Knowledge Script does not find license files. This release resolves an issue in which the MFXP_LicenseInUseHigh job could not locate the license files that grant connection rights to a client, which caused the following error message: An error has occurred which prevented data from being retrieved for this iteration. With this release, the script can successfully access the license files for this module. (ENG317399)

To get the updates provided in this release, you must install the module to the repository (QDB), and then propagate changes to any running jobs for the Knowledge Scripts that were updated in this release. AppManager 7.x does not automatically update renamed or copied Knowledge Scripts. For more information, see the "Upgrading Knowledge Script Jobs" section in the management guide.

Release 7.2.87.0, August 2011

This release resolved the following issue:

  • MFXP_ApplicationUsersHigh fails when applications are deleted. This release resolves an issue in which the MFXP_ApplicationUsersHigh Knowledge Script job fails if an application has been deleted since the previous run of the job. When this issue occurs, the job returns the error, Type mismatch. With this release, MFXP_ApplicationUsersHigh Knowledge Script jobs raise a more descriptive warning when a monitored application no longer exists. (ENG305768)

Release 7.2.74.0, August 2010

This release resolved the following issue:

  • ServerFarmHealth job does not ignore specified servers. This release resolves an issue in which the MFXP_ServerFarmHealth Knowledge Script job monitors the servers you specify in the "Servers to ignore" parameter. With this release, a code change corrects the problem, preventing the Knowledge Script from monitoring the servers you want to ignore. (ENG289721)

Release 7.2.67.0, March 2010

This release provided the following enhancement:

  • Ability to exclude services from Server Farm monitoring. The MFXP_ServerFarmHealth Knowledge Script now allows you to exclude the following services from monitoring. This new functionality is useful when a service is not available on the server you are monitoring. For more information, see the Help for the ServerFarmHealth script.
    • Client Network Service
    • Encryption Service
    • Independent Management Architecture Service
    • MFCom Service
    • Citrix Licensing Service

This release also resolved the following issue:

  • Discovery fails when services not present. Before you install this release, the Discovery_MFXP Knowledge Script job fails when expected Citrix services are not installed. Instead of failing, the job should succeed with an event indicating that discovery was only partially successful. After you install this release, a code change allows the Discovery_MFXP job to partially succeed and raise an event if some services were not discovered. (ENG279293)

Release 7.2.63.0, November 2009

This release resolved the following issue:

  • Discovery fails with generic error. Before you install this release, the Discovery_MFXP Knowledge Script job fails with the following error message: MFXP Discovery encountered an error, causing it to fail. After you install this release, a code change resolves faulty exception handling, allowing the Discovery_MFXP job to proceed successfully. (ENG276166)

Release 7.2.59.0, October 2009

This release provided the following enhancements:

  • Support for Citrix XenApp 5.0.
  • Support for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Server 2008, and 64-bit Windows Server 2003.
  • Ability to monitor the percentage of all licenses in use on the License Server, on clustered and non-clustered environments. You can use the LicenseInUseHigh Knowledge Script to monitor licenses on clustered or non-clustered environments.
  • New objects added to the TreeView for Operator Console. The TreeView for this release uses a reorganized set of objects that includes Citrix XenApp or Presentation Server, License Servers, Licenses, and Farms. New objects for this release include Servers and two additional Services: MFCom and CitrixLicensing.

The following Knowledge Scripts were new in this release:

  • PublishedApplicationDetails. The PublishedApplicationDetails Knowledge Script allows you to check to see if a specific application is on the list of published applications, and it also helps you to check which servers are assigned to that published application.
  • DefaultDataCollector The DefaultDataCollector Knowledge Script allows you to determine which server is the default Data Collector (master browser) as well as the zone for a particular Citrix Presentation Server or XenApp server.

Release 7.1, June 2007
