Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 2

Situation

Samba
Error: NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_RESET

After upgrade to SLES 11 SP2 started seeing lots of the following type of error message reported by the smbd deamon in the messages file.

smbd/process.c:457(receive_smb_talloc)  receive_smb_raw_talloc failed for client x.x.x.x read error = NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_RESET. : 5 Time(s)

The IP address seems to always be a Windows 2008 server.

Resolution

A LAN trace shows that the IP address represented by x.x.x.x (above) made a TCP connection with the server over TCP port 445.

When the application on IP address x.x.x.x no longer needs the connection it sends a TCP RST

The error messages is simply stating that a TCP RST was received.

You can either ignore the errors understanding them to be informational
OR
You can decrease the smb.conf files log level = setting and restart Samba.
