U.S. Healthcare Provider

This healthcare provider operates in 20 states across the United States, receiving more than 2 million patients each year at its hospitals, clinics, continuing care and hospice facilities. The organization employs approximately 85,000 people and reports annual operating revenues of more than $13 billion.

The organization’s operations have grown steadily over the years, a trend that has had a significant impact on the size and complexity of its IT environment. IT administrators were finding it increasingly difficult to manage the growing number of users on the organization’s systems.

“When adding new users, our IT team had to manually provision accounts across a variety of conflicting systems, a process that was time-consuming and error-prone,” said a company spokesperson. “We were concerned that it was taking too long to provide users with access to the applications and information they needed to perform their jobs effectively.”

The healthcare provider wanted to simplify and accelerate application access by introducing single sign-on capabilities, and to improve overall security for easier compliance with government regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

About U.S. Healthcare Provider

The organization found it difficult to efficiently provision and manage large numbers of user accounts across multiple systems. It wanted to introduce greater speed and security around identity management.

Challenge

This U.S. healthcare provider struggled to efficiently provision and manage large numbers of user accounts across multiple systems. It wanted to introduce greater speed and security around identity management.

Our Solution

The healthcare provider decided to upgrade to Identity Manager 4 Advanced Edition and introduce Access Governance Suite. The organization worked with our consulting services to design an integrated solution that best met its current business needs and long-term goals. “Our main objectives were to increase overall automation and efficiency,” said a spokesperson. “We believe that the NetIQ (now a part of Micro Focus) solutions are the best choice for helping drive a more proactive, integrated approach to user and identity management.”

Identity Manager will provide the organization with a standardized and simplified process for provisioning entitlements based on roles, while Access Governance Suite will enable it to report on user access rights for proving regulatory compliance.

The healthcare provider plans to link its human resource management (HRM) application with Access Governance Suite and Identity Manager. When a new user account is created in the HRM application, our solutions will pull the details from the application and use them to create a single user profile.

The organization will also take advantage of intelligent provisioning capabilities offered by Identity Manager 4 Advanced Edition, which combine automated business rules with efficient role-based provisioning for more effective identity management. Using role-specific dashboards, business users can generate and track provisioning requests, a self-service capability that gives users greater control over their own identity information and reduces the administration burden on IT staff.

In addition to automated provisioning, our solution will provide users with a single set of login credentials for all systems, speeding application access.

Results

The combination of Identity Manager and Access Governance Suite will make it much easier for the healthcare provider to manage its identity policies, even as business continues to grow. Linking our solutions to the organization’s HRM system will replace manual user provisioning and de-provisioning processes with highly accurate and automated workflows, improving productivity of both IT staff and business users.

“Identity Manager and Access Governance Suite will make it much quicker and easier for us to manage identities across the company, and will help ensure that the right users always have fast access to the applications and information they need,” said a spokesperson. The organization will be able to strengthen security by providing enhanced visibility into user access rights and by tightening application access. With greater control over which users are able to log in to which systems, our solutions will help the organization safeguard sensitive patient information, and comply more easily with key regulatory requirements, including HIPAA.

“The rich functionality and automation of the NetIQ solutions will be a huge boost to user management efforts,” said a spokesperson. “Our IT team will be able to meet the business’ needs with ease, and ensure that the organization continues to deliver safe, high-quality care to a growing number of patients.”
