7.3 Basic terminologies of Kubernetes

7.3.1 Kubernetes keywords and their usage in Self Service Password Reset

The following table includes the basic terminologies that are used in the proceeding sections.

Term

Description

Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS)

EKS is a managed Kubernetes service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). It streamlines the management of Kubernetes clusters on AWS by seamlessly integrating with other AWS services.

Container

An executable image that contains the Self Service Password Reset component and all of its dependencies.

Pod

A pod consists of a set of running Self Service Password Reset containers that share the same networking and storage resources.

Worker Node or Node

A worker node is a virtual or physical machine where the Self Service Password Reset pods run.

Master Node

A master node controls and manages the worker nodes.

Kubernetes Cluster

A set of master and worker nodes to run the Self Service Password Reset pods.

Kubelet

An agent that runs on each node in the cluster to ensure that the containers are running in a po

Kube-scheduler

Kube-scheduler is the default Kubernetes scheduler that finds and assigns the optimal node for every newly created pod. It also assigns node for any other unscheduled pod. Kubelet runs the pods in a node. For more information, see Kube-scheduler.

Namespace

A virtual Kubernetes cluster. For more information, see Namespaces.

Release

An instance of a chart that is running in a Kubernetes cluster. You can install the same chart multiple times to create many releases.

AWS Application Load Balancer Controller

It monitors the state of Kubernetes resources and automatically provisions, configures, and manages the application load balancer based on the specifications in your Kubernetes cluster.

7.3.2 Helm charts

Helm is a package manager for Kubernetes. The Helm packaging format is called Charts or Helm Charts. Helm chart is a YAML file that helps you to deploy, configure, and upgrade Self Service Password Reset container on Kubernetes clusters.

The Self Service Password Reset Helm chart defines several Kubernetes resources as a set.

The following table describes the files and directories of Helm:

Term

Description

Helm Charts or Charts

A collection of YAML template files that describe the Kubernetes resources.

values.yaml

A YAML file that contains the default Self Service Password Reset configuration values for the chart. As per your requirement, modify this file before installing Self Service Password Reset.

To check the version of the Helm client installed on your machine, run command helm version.

To view the Kubernetes version running on the client and server, run command kubectl version.

For more information about Helm and Helm Charts, see helm and Kubernetes.

Helm upgrade

Self Service Password Reset 4.8 supports Helm chart version 1.0.1. You can check the version of the Helm client installed on your machine, by using the command helm version and then update to this version using the command helm upgrade. For more information, see Helm Version.
