The Security Manager Self-monitoring module monitors the performance of Security Manager components to ensure efficient operations. This module detects, alerts on, and automatically responds to critical events, and helps indicate, correct, and prevent possible service outages or configuration problems so you can quickly take corrective or preventive actions.

Improvements are made in direct response to suggestions from our customers. We thank you for your time and valuable input. We hope you continue to help us ensure our products meet all your needs. You can post feedback in the Security Manager forum on Qmunity, our community Web site that also includes product notifications, blogs, and the Security Manager user group.

Why Install This Module?

This release of the Security Manager Self-monitoring module contains various improvements to address functional and performance issues.

Provides Sentinel Connection Monitoring Capability

This release adds the following event processing rules to inform you about communication issues between the Security Manager 6.5.4 central computer and the Sentinel 7.0 server:

  • Security Manager cannot communicate with Sentinel
  • Security Manager cannot send one or more messages
  • Security Manager successfully reconnected with Sentinel

These three rules generate alerts when the central computer cannot communicate with the configured Sentinel server or when the central computer re-establishes the connection.

Removes Reporting Cube Event Rule

To reduce unnecessary alert noise in environments where you did not installing the reporting server, this release disables the "Security Manager Cube Database not found" event rule included in the Security Manager Self-monitoring > Database rules set. (ENG312733)

Installing This Module

The Security Manager setup program automatically installs this module. However, if an updated module becomes available, you can install this module using the Module Installer. NetIQ recommends that you regularly check for and install updated versions of the Security Manager Self-monitoring module to ensure Security Manager has full functionality. For more information about installing this module, see the User Guide for NetIQ Security Manager.

Note
When you update the Security Manager Self-monitoring module, you might also need to upgrade the provider for the module installed on your agent computers. If you monitor Windows computers using proxy agents, you should upgrade the Windows Proxy Provider included in the Self-monitoring module. If you do not use your agents for proxy monitoring, you do not need to upgrade the provider.

You can scan managed computers using the Development Console to upgrade the provider on your your managed agents. However, you must manually upgrade the provider on unmanaged agents by copying the WindowsProxyProvider.cab file from the NetIQ Security Manager\OnePoint\InstallMcsApps\ProgrammableProvider folder on the central computer to the NetIQ Security Manager\OnePoint\Providers\configgroup\IncomingPrgProviders folder on the unmanaged agent, where configgroup is the name of your configuration group.

Known Issues

Additional Permissions Needed for Microsoft SQL Server 2008

If you are using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or a later version, a known issue exists where you must add the Security Manager Service account to the msdb database fixed database role SQLAgentReaderRole for the Check SQL Server Jobs and Agent Status script to run properly.

You must also perform the following steps to enable Security Manager to monitor SQL Server Agent status:

  1. Log on to the database server using an account that is a member of the Microsoft SQL Server sysadmin role.
  2. Start SQL Server Management Studio, located in the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 program group.
  3. In the left pane, right-click on the SQL Server you want to monitor and select Properties.
  4. Select the Permissions page.
  5. In the logins or roles pane, select the service account.
  6. In the explicit permissions pane, navigate to View server state.
  7. Select Grant.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close SQL Server Management Studio.
