8.7 Understanding PlateSpin AMIs

PlateSpin Migrate leverages the following PlateSpin AMIs uploaded in the Community AMI section of Amazon Web Services Console. You are not required to perform any action with these AMIs.

PlateSpin Migrate uses the following AMIs for replication of the workloads to AWS:

  • PlateSpin Replication Environment - Linux: Used for the replication of the following workloads:

    • All Windows workloads.

    • All Linux workloads excluding the RHEL 7 and later family.

  • PlateSpin Replication Environment - Linux (Based on SLES 12): Used for the replication of RHEL 7 and later family of Linux workloads.

Based on the target workload OS licensing model that you configure in the migration job, PlateSpin Migrate uses one of the following AMIs during the cutover of the workloads. See License Type.

  • PlateSpin Replication Environment - Windows: Used during the cutover of the Windows workloads for which AWS manages the Microsoft software licensing compliance on the target workload and bills you for the license.

  • PlateSpin Replication Environment - Windows (BYOL): Used during the cutover of the Windows workloads for which AWS allows you to bring your own license (BYOL) that you have already purchased from Microsoft and does not bill you for the license. You are solely responsible for complying with Microsoft licensing.

  • PlateSpin Replication Environment - Linux: In addition to using this AMI for replication of workloads to AWS, this AMI is also used during the cutover of the Linux workloads. AWS allows you to bring your own license (BYOL) for all Linux workloads and does not bill you for the OS license on the target workload.
