AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server

NetIQ AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server provides a set of transactions that can be run from client computers to SQL servers. These transactions resemble actual SQL Server transactions and appear the same to the network components that process them. The Knowledge Scripts use these transactions to measure and monitor the availability and response time of typical SQL queries. You can deploy them from any sites served by SQL Server.

This document outlines why you should install this release and identifies any known issues. We assume you are familiar with previous versions of this product. For more information about installing the module, see the AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server Management Guide, included in the download package.

Why Install This Release?

Release 7.1.138.0 of AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server resolves the following issue:

  • SQL-RT_ODBCDSNQuery job fails when duplicate objects exist. Before you install this release, the SQL-RT_ODBCDSNQuery Knowledge Script job fails with the following error: Subquery returned more than 1 value. The error results from two objects in the repository having the same name. After you install this release, a change in the code for the SQL query accommodates duplicate object names and allows the SQL-RT_ODBCDSNQuery Knowledge Script job to run. (ENG258705)

For more information about the issues resolved with this release, see NetIQ Knowledge Base article NETIQKB71512.

This release of AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server replaces all releases discussed in Previous Releases.

Contents of the Download Package

AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server includes Knowledge Scripts to discover and monitor SQL Server resources, and several managed objects shared among the ResponseTime modules: netiqxml.dll, netiqprops.dll, qsermona4.dll, xmlservmona.dll, qcomcnfg.dll, qcma.dll, qdbrt.dll, and qrtdisc.dl. The download package includes this Readme, a management guide, Help for Knowledge Scripts, and several files that are used during installation:

  • AM70-SQL-RT-7.1.138.0.msi, the application module setup program.
  • AM70-SQL-RT-7.1.138.0.ini, a configuration file used with the AppManager setup program.
  • AM70-SQL-RT-7.1.138.0.xml, a configuration file used for deploying the module with Control Center. This is the file you check into the Control Center Web Depot.
  • ckSQL-RT.exe, the pre-installation check used with the AppManager setup program.

When you download the module, these files are copied by default to the the Program Files\NetIQ folder on the download computer. We recommend that you copy these files to the \windows_installation\setup\Setup Files directory on the same distribution computer on which you saved your main AppManager software and documentation. By doing so, you maintain all AppManager software in one location that is easily accessible when you want to add more repositories, management servers, or agents.

Installing This Release

Install the module on all agent computers, on all repository computers to install Knowledge Scripts, and on all console computers to install the Help. Run the setup program only once on each repository and agent computer.

Backlevel SQL-RT Knowledge Scripts are not supported. Backlevel Knowledge Scripts are defined as Knowledge Scripts from versions earlier than version 6.4, which became available in May 2006. If you have backlevel Knowledge Scripts running in your AppManager management site, upgrade them to the current version.

For more information about installing this module, see the AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server Management Guide, included in the download package.

Known Issues

NetIQ Corporation strives to ensure our products provide quality solutions for your enterprise software needs. The following issues are currently being researched. If you need further assistance with any issue, please contact Technical Support.

  • 64-bit resources do not fail the pre-requisite check at install. AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server does not support 64-bit platforms. However, the presence of 64-bit components on the computers on which you install the module does not cause the pre-requisite check to fail. In addition, the pre-requisite check HTML report does not contain results of the test for 32- or 64-bit components. (ENG266301)

Previous Releases

This release of AppManager ResponseTime for Microsoft SQL Server includes enhancements added in previous releases.

Hotfix 71331, November 2008

Hotfix 71331 resolved the following issues:

  • ODBCQuery script does not raise events when SQL Server is down. Before installing this release, the SQL-RT_ODBCQuery Knowledge Script does not raise events or collect data when SQL Server is down. After you install this release, a code change prevents the ODBC driver from becoming unresponsive, or hanging, thereby allowing the ODBCQuery script to raise events and collect data when SQL Server is down. (ENG254941)
  • Multi-word DSN names raise errors. Before installing this release, the SQL-RT_ADODSNQuery and SQL-RT_ODBCDSN Knowledge Scripts raise errors when you attempt to use DSN names that consist of more than one word, such as SQL2000 Server. The scripts interpret the multi-word DSN name as two separate DSN names. After installing this release, the scripts successfully interpret multi-word DSN names. (ENG256168)
  • SQL passwords raise errors. Before installing this release, the SQL-RT_ADODSNQuery Knowledge Script cannot interpret certain SQL logon passwords. After installing this release, the script successfully interprets SQL logon passwords. (ENG256261)

For more information about the issues resolved with this release, see NetIQ Knowledge Base article NETIQKB71331.

Release 7.1, March 2007

This release offered the following enhancements and fixes:

  • Event proxying capability. You can now select the resource object where events appear in the console TreeView. This feature supports the Service Map Viewer component of Control Center. You can select whether events generated by the ResponseTime for SQL managed object appear on the agent, on the server, or both.
  • Backlevel Knowledge Script support discontinued. To support architectural and build enhancements, including a smaller installation profile, all Knowledge Scripts from versions earlier than version 6.4 of AppManager ResponseTime for SQL Server have been deprecated. These Knowledge Scripts will fail if you try to run them.
