VigilEnt Password Manager 2.0 Streamlines Password Management for Windows, Linux and UNIX Environments

Software Automates Password Management to Reduce Help Desk Burden; Delivers Quick Time to Value

Press Release

LAS VEGAS, Nev.

At Help Desk Institute 2003 (Booth # 229), NetIQ Corp. (Nasdaq: NTIQ), a leading provider of Systems Management, Security Management and Web Analytics solutions, today announced general availability of NetIQ® VigilEnt™ Password Manager 2.0, part of the VigilEnt™ Administration and Identity Management solutions group.

VigilEnt Password Manager 2.0 automates password management and generates quantifiable cost savings by providing end users with password self-service and synchronization functionality. For example, end user password reset requests continue dogging IT help desks because of the numerous user IDs and passwords required of users to enable them access to many business-critical applications and multiple computing platforms. According to Gartner, approximately 30 percent of all help desk calls are password-related. With each help desk call costing approximately $25, large call volumes for administrative tasks result in significant operational costs.

"IT and help desk organizations are looking to vendors for help in addressing significant operational issues that are reducing productivity and increasing the cost of doing business," said Dave Peterson, product manager for Administration & Identity Management solutions at NetIQ. "With VigilEnt Password Manager 2.0, NetIQ is delivering immediate and demonstrable value, reducing the volume of repetitive calls to help desks for password resets and account unlocks, freeing those administrators to handle more strategic issues."

With the VigilEnt Password Manager, end-users' many passwords can be reduced to one universal password. No system changes are required as VigilEnt Password Manager leverages existing native login IDs and application controls to auto-synchronize passwords across the entire enterprise. In a single action, an end user can initiate a password change across all supported platforms such as Windows, UNIX, Linux and enterprise applications. End users maintain consistent access to multiple systems and applications and vastly limit their downtime.

Administrators have the option to configure pass-through access for end users so that they can be authenticated against either server or domain accounts, such as Windows, UNIX, Linux, NetWare, LDAP and iSeries, and can prioritize assets for password changes prior to propagation to other assets and synchronization. Version 2.0 also provides for user group delegation across IT asset so that help desk personnel can be allocated granular responsibility and control.

New in version 2.0 of VigilEnt Password Manager:

  • Enhanced installation features speeding customer time to value
  • Enhanced support for password resets on local Windows accounts
  • Secure permissions extension across the enterprise
  • Asset prioritization for password changes before changes are propagated
  • User group delegation, which gives help desk personnel granular control of users and assets within their purview

Combined with the newly released VigilEnt™ User Manager 1.0 - software automating the creation, modification and deletion of accounts, user IDs, passwords and access privileges, with role and rule-based provisioning - VigilEnt Password Manager further extends NetIQ's portfolio of cross-platform identity management solutions. The two solutions together effectively streamline identity and user management and decrease overall IT expenditures while delivering quick time to value and enforcing enterprise-wide security policies.

"NetIQ's VigilEnt Administration and Identity Management solutions can be installed, operational and effective in a fraction of the time other vendors require, without sacrificing capabilities," said Ross McKenzie, director of Information Systems at Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. "In protecting our networks and data, I continue to look to NetIQ for high-power solutions that quickly deliver on their promise."
