NetIQ WebMarshal 3.5 Scores an A+ by Fairfield C.S.D.
School district controls questionable Web browsing and sees dramatic decrease in network infiltration of spam
SAN JOSE, Calif.
NetIQ Corp. (Nasdaq: NTIQ), a leading provider of Systems & Security Management and Web Analytics solutions, today announced that Fairfield City School District (C.S.D.) is making significant progress in eliminating unproductive Web browsing by allowing students and faculty to view approved Web sites while blocking access to offensive and unproductive sites.
Fairfield C.S.D. deployed NetIQ® WebMarshal™ and NetIQ® MailMarshal™ in August of 2002 and has since seen dramatic improvements in administration and regulation of the school district's e-mail and Internet usage policy through the elimination of spam and other objectionable content that infiltrates school networks. While NetIQ MailMarshal has provided the capability to fight spam and stop inappropriate e-mail content, NetIQ WebMarshal has helped to control inappropriate Web browsing. If students or faculty mistakenly browse to a site with inappropriate content, NetIQ WebMarshal first restricts access and then automatically adds the site to a growing "blacklist" thereby preventing future violations. Network administrators can also use NetIQ WebMarshal to manage Web access by user or workstation and prepare detailed reports on browsing activity and security.
"The combination of NetIQ MailMarshal and NetIQ WebMarshal enables us to manage critical IT problems including network intrusion, viruses and spam in addition to preventing our 10,000 students from encountering inappropriate Web content," said Jeff Myers and Jeff McKinney, IT supervisors for Fairfield C.S.D, a school district located in Fairfield, Ohio, educating students from kindergarten to 12th grade.
Today, NetIQ unveiled NetIQ WebMarshal 3.5, the most comprehensive solution for managing acceptable use of the Internet that is both powerful and easy to use. Key features include:
- Real-time Content Analysis to intelligently identify and automatically categorize good and bad sites based on their content
- Signature-based file identification and integration with a multitude of anti-virus scanners to identify and prevent dangerous downloads
- Improved manageability with new wizards for time and bandwidth quota configuration
- User authentication based on NT Domains and Novell NDS/E-Directory listing
- Support for Network Load Balancing and Clustered Failover Redundancy
NetIQ WebMarshal is complemented by the full range of NetIQ® Marshal™ content security solutions, including NetIQ MailMarshal and NetIQ® imMarshal™ for MSN. Together, the NetIQ Marshal suite delivers fast, easy-to-use content security. NetIQ MailMarshal is NetIQ's e-mail scanning solution that enforces an organization's Acceptable Use Policy while protecting against viruses, spam and loss of confidential data. NetIQ imMarshal for MSN is a content security solution designed to enforce responsible employee use of Instant Messaging (IM). NetIQ acquired the Marshal product suite late last year from Marshal Software Ltd., a New Zealand-based company recognized in the anti-spam and enterprise content security market. Fairfield C.S.D. is not the only school district benefiting from the NetIQ Marshal products. Through SchoolMarshal™, a program offered by Content Security Solutions, a NetIQ Authorized Reseller, schools throughout the country are able to implement NetIQ WebMarshal and NetIQ MailMarshal at a discounted rate as low as 50 cents per user.
"NetIQ WebMarshal and NetIQ MailMarshal have become essential to customers like Fairfield C.S.D., which faces a deluge of spam, intrusions and viruses and is charged simultaneously with monitoring the content being viewed by network users," said Matt Dircks, vice president of Product Management for Security at NetIQ. "Our software saves educational administrators needless IT headaches and lets them spend their time focusing on their core responsibility — educating our children."
