NetIQ Customers Winning Spam Battle
Companies across all industries use NetIQ MailMarshal SMTP to stifle persistent, growing e-mail issues
SAN JOSE, Calif.
NetIQ Corp. (Nasdaq: NTIQ), a leading provider of Systems & Security Management and Web Analytics solutions, today announced that Business Telecom Inc. and Arnall Golden Gregory LLP are making significant progress in battling spam with NetIQ® MailMarshal™ SMTP anti-spam and anti-virus solution.
By using the complete NetIQ MailMarshal content security solution, which includes integration and management of anti-spam, anti-virus, confidentiality protection, legal liability protection, security reports and e-mail archiving, organizations such as Business Telecom Inc. and Arnall Golden Gregory are freeing up valuable resources and increasing productivity. More than 5,000 organizations worldwide—ranging from small- to medium-sized businesses to global enterprises—use NetIQ MailMarshal SMTP for their more than 2.5 million end users. In the past four months alone, the anti-spam and anti-virus solution has increased its user base by 20 percent.
“As e-mail becomes increasingly critical to organizations, issues such as spam are top of mind,” said Matt Cain, senior vice president at META Group, a leading provider of information technology research, advisory services and strategic consulting. “The market demands solutions that not only reduce cost, but also save employee time, network bandwidth and system processing power by enforcing effective policies and technical controls.”
Business Telecom, Inc., an integrated communications provider of voice, Internet and data solutions to businesses in the southeastern United States, implemented NetIQ MailMarshal SMTP as a part of its ongoing effort to reduce the volume of spam delivered to its SMTP environment. As an ISP, many spammers often confused the company’s corporate domain with its ISP domain, resulting in undesirable amounts of spam attacks. With NetIQ MailMarshal SMTP, Business Telecom Inc. has been able to block an average of 350,000 spam attempts directed toward the corporate domain per day.
“We were using a very popular application as an SMTP gateway, but we undertook a review to increase our capabilities. While researching a few products that were NT/2000-based and supported MAPS RBL+ and other lists, I was impressed by NetIQ MailMarshal solution’s trial download and the power, flexibility and perception of the administrative interface,” said Lance Albury, network manager for Business Telecom, Inc. “With NetIQ MailMarshal SMTP, we have not experienced any significant spam-related downtime in over a year.”
Arnall Golden Gregory LLP, a leading Georgia law firm providing innovative legal counsel to entrepreneurial and growing companies in a number of industries, was inundated with spam before implementing NetIQ MailMarshal SMTP. The law firm now blocks roughly 5,000 spam messages per day while monitoring e-mail traffic, Web usage and meeting HIPAA guidelines on encrypted e-mail messages.
This growing firm’s needs were two-fold. They needed protection of sensitive documentation that they sent and received electronically and they needed to block spam. “We needed to be especially sensitive to the needs of our healthcare clients. The NetIQ MailMarshal Secure module helps us meet and exceed HIPAA requirements and allows us control over how protected health information is communicated by allowing us to set up specific rules for our clients and send encrypted e-mail messages to entire organizations,” said Paul Grulke, director of Information Services at Arnall Golden Gregory. “At the same time, the software’s endlessly customizable rules and outstanding performance have allowed us to internally detect and block thousands of spam messages every day.”
