Louisa County Public School Division Selects NetIQ Voice and Video Management Solution
Rural School District Uses Vivinet Manager to Drastically Reduce Time Spent Monitoring VoIP System
SAN JOSE, Calif.
NetIQ Corp. (Nasdaq: NTIQ), a leading provider of Systems & Security Management and Web Analytics solutions, today announced that Louisa County Public School Division has implemented NetIQ's Vivinet™ Manager to monitor and manage its Voice over IP (VoIP) system.
David Cantwell, coordinator of technology at Louisa County Public School Division, selected Vivinet Manager to help solve intermittent and inconsistent call quality problems experienced by administrators and teachers, including dropped calls, echo and lost voicemail. These problems were difficult to track, causing Cantwell to spend 30 to 40 percent of each day working to determine the cause of these issues. Since implementing Vivinet Manager, call quality problems are almost entirely gone and the time spent managing VoIP has drastically decreased. Now, nine times out of 10 when issues do occur, Cantwell is already working on correcting them before users complain.
"Before installing Vivinet Manager we were unable to solve the mysterious issues or determine reasons for the inconsistencies," said Cantwell. "The greatest benefit of this product is that we are not in the dark anymore. We are bridging the digital gap most small school districts face and, with this technological advancement, we are able to correlate a user complaint with an issue then solve it more effectively. Even better, we can solve an issue before users are even aware that one exists."
In addition to the overall cost effectiveness of NetIQ's Vivinet™ family of products, the scalability of Vivinet Manager is the primary driver for the implementation of a new integrated phone and voice mail system. Cantwell deployed a pure VoIP system to achieve the highest call quality for the entire district using Cisco Systems' CallManager IP PBX, and Cisco Unity voicemail servers, with 150 Cisco IP phones and approximately 200 Cisco IP soft phones at five locations.
Cantwell asked systems integrator, AAC Associates, to help evaluate management solutions on the market and they chose NetIQ's solution because it provided the broadest management for their complex integrated phone and voice mail system. Upon installation, Cantwell was able to immediately find a bad port on a major switch that was causing jitter, packet loss and call quality problems. He was also able to troubleshoot several voicemail performance issues and track usage, including how many messages were building up in the system.
"Voice over IP systems offer new capabilities and features that far supersede traditional PBX systems," explains Jeff Lawn, convergence sales manager for AAC Associates, a technology consulting firm specializing in network engineering, information assurance, and convergence services. "Powering these systems is a critical business back-end that must be guardedly managed to ensure maximum performance. Vivinet Manager has provided our clients with confidence in having the highest call quality by proactively monitoring their IP telephony system."
The rural school district, located about 50 miles outside of Richmond, Virginia, serves 5,400 students in three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and administrators in five central support office buildings. Louisa County Public School Division is determined to have its students live in a technology-rich environment and believes that technology will provide students with the opportunity to access and manage information, communicate, explore, think and invent in ways never before possible.
