Lost in the fanfare in last month’s release of the Novell File Management Suite was the introduction of Novell Storage Manager 2.5 SP1. Version 2.5 SP1 was included in the Novell File Management Suite primarily because of its integration with Novell File Reporter—a product also included in the suite. But there are a lot of cool new features in Version 2.5 SP1 that you’ll definitely want to take advantage of right away.

Here are a few of the improvements worth noting:

Completely new NSMAdmin interface for Active Directory
NSMAdmin—the administrative tool used to create and manage the directory-based policies that automate storage actions, has been updated to match the easier-to-use interface for eDirectory environments. If you administer Novell Storage Manager in an Active Directory environment, you will appreciate the intuitive design that centralizes all management tasks in a single management interface. New tabs, buttons, and drop-down menus make administrative work much easier to perform.

Policy reporting enabled through new Novell File Reporter product
When Novell Storage Manager 2.5 SP1 is deployed in a network environment that includes Novell File Reporter, you can install a Policy Path Reporter plug-in that will extend the capabilities of Novell File Reporter to include the ability to report on NSM policy paths, rather than just volumes.

This capability is particularly powerful because it allows you to specify the target paths where user and collaborative storage resides on the network. Because network user and collaborative home folders tend to be the source of most of the stale, redundant, and non-work-related file types, the Policy Path Reporter can quickly and easily be the means of generating reports on the storage areas that you care about most.

Storage Redistribution
For Novell Storage Manager deployments in eDirectory environments, this is a new policy setting that allows network administrators to automatically redistribute network user storage content so that it is more efficiently dispersed among network volumes. Redistribution can take place based on the specifications of the administrator. The administrator can even see the approximate results of the storage redistribution before it takes place.

And More
For Novell Storage Manager deployments in Active Directory environments, Version 2.5 SP1 no longer requires that Event Monitors be deployed on domain controllers. Additionally, Version 2.5 SP1 supports Windows Server 2008.

Finally, there are more than 30 additional performance enhancements built into the Engine, Event Monitor, or NSMAdmin.
