Earlier this month Novell Training Services launched a new certification, for administrators of Novell Identity Manager 4. It’s called the Certified Novell Identity Manager Administrator, or CNIMA.
I’ve blogged over the past few weeks about the new courses in the Novell Identity Manager curriculum. These are courses 3109 “Novell identity Manager 4: Administration” and 3110 “Novell Identity Manager 4 Advanced Edition: Customization and Roles”. These two courses are intended to prepare you to take the CNIMA exam.
What you might not know is that when we create a certification curriculum we start by identifying the exam objectives before we start writing content. For the CNIMA we sat down with experienced Identity Manager administrators (back in January and February of 2010) and plotted out the most important knowledge and skills an IDM administrator would need to have. We wrote objectives based on that list of knowledge and skills and used those same objectives as the outline for the courses. The goal was to make CNIMA exam reflect what an IDM administrator actually needs to know and do on the job.
The ideal certification is not about book learning–it’s about giving a person a chance to prove they can do a job.
So we write the testing objectives first, then design the curriculum to teach to those objectives. Once the courses are written, we write the test items based on the content in the courses. We beta test the exam with people in our target audience (some experienced and some not so experienced) to make sure the experienced people who should pass get a passing score and the less experienced people who shouldn’t pass get a failing score. It’s a nice, complete circle from beginning to end.
I hope the CNIMA certification is useful to those experienced IDM administrators out there who want or need to prove their skills with Novell Identity Manager 4. Follow this link to read more about this exam: http://www.novell.com/training/certinfo/cnima/.
