About Joe Rogers

I've been in IT for over 19 years however, I've been been a student forever. My background in technology, music and business provides me with a very unique perspective on how the business of IT should be run. That's right, IT is a business and unless it can get it's stuff together, the average IT director is going to be nothing more than a contracts manager as the business decides to leverage 3rd party innovation suppliers. I've worn many hats in my life and that means that in addition to leading a team, I'm happy to roll up my sleeves and crawl through that data center raised floor if need be. As a leader, my success is dictated by the successes of the people around me. My job is to empower people to lead and drive innovation for the business. If they can do that then I'm doing my job.

I’ve recently started a new job here at Micro Focus | NetIQ : Account Manager.  According to my friends in sales roles,  this means that I need to get used to the word “No”.  I get that.  Not everyone that you speak with is going to be looking for the solution to the problem that…

The most fundamental question for any business – Are we open?  Not just the doors to the building but can we deliver the services that our customers contract with us for? IT is a challenge.  In the previous post,  we talked about making sure that all of your IT stuff is working.  No red lights on…

A few months ago, we introduced you to the ‘Four Lenses of IT operations’. In this post, NetIQ defines four questions and the associated key capabilities that IT Operations needs in order to quickly and confidently answer these questions on a regular basis. I’d like to go a little bit more in depth into the questions…

I know what you’re thinking and no,  I’m not drunk.  What does monitoring have to do with better applications? Well,  for me,  a lot.  Think for a moment about who is involved with creating applications.  You’ve got developers (obviously), testers,  architects, project managers and probably a few other roles.  Now think about who supports the…

If you have ever watched TV,  you’ve probably seen a detective show or two.  The plot usually involves some kind of crime and then a team of citizens, detectives, coroners or whomever the show is about working for the next 40 minutes to figure out the who, what, when, where and why’s of the crime…

It’s that time of year again.  We take a look at some old habits and put together a list of changes that we’d like to make in the new year.  Some of these changes are getting rid of bad habits like smoking or perhaps adding in new habits like going to the gym regularly. I’d…

If you’ve been in the corporate workforce for more then a few months, you’ve probably heard the term “Breaking down the silos” or something close to that.  Silos are everywhere and you don’t need to be in a giant Fortune 100 organization to experience them. Silos can easily exist in a 15 person startup as well….
